James Gurney came to MassArt recently and made the entire Illustration department feel warm and fuzzy inside.
Also, he signed my copy of Imaginative Realism with a T.rex! So happy <3

Painted in the MassArt courtyard. The shadow of the Collins building and the wind were fierce that day.
To the People // Portfolio
Spring sun warmed young faces
Tempting them to sleep on the morning train
But now we become cyborgs
With wiry apendages that
Extend from ear to palm
Connecting one electric web to another
A revolution of spark and quartz
That wakes us with vibration
and bombardment
//poem 8, 4/2012
Flashes of harsh yellow light
Against black coats and smoke clouds
Scrolling advertisements with
Long words and white faces
Vision is spotted and grainy
From time in air with no sleep
I refuse to speak
Staring out the window
Recalling the anguish of ancestors

thecloudyborderline asked: I'm at Berklee and it's awful. I'm constantly drowned in jazz and not able to express myself. Everyone here is a famewhore. I am switching to Massart and feel really good about it. I'm going for installation/video art/painting and maybe art history will be my minor or major. Anyway how do you like it?
Hey. Even as a jaded, burnt-out senior I can say it’s a damn good school in many respects- especially considering the price. They’re a bit disorganized and I have some issues with their design curriculum, but if you’re planning on majoring in SIM/Art Ed/Painting I think you’ll be quite happy. You seem to already have a pretty good grasp on the art world, and having that framework/language/whatever you want to call it will make your time there a lot easier and fulfilling.
Also, your knowledge of music will be very advantageous. You will be able to integrate that into installation art or performance art EASILY- the SIM students are given a lot of free range and time to figure out what they want to do, so if you have a vision, you can fulfill it. They also have cool electives across the board, and the longer you stay, the more you can take. SIM has sound/video editing, electronic projects, Sculpture has woodworking, glassblowing, small and large metals, and Art Ed has classes that span art history and politics, if that’s your thing.
The faculty are generally a wealth of knowledge. Before you go keep in mind that your professors will have very varied opinions and may give you a LOT of different opinions in critiques- people are constantly fighting over concept vs craft, practicality vs “art world” value, etc. Take all of these with a grain of salt! Learn as much as you can: make mistakes, make a foundation, make friends, and perhaps above all figure out how to *make stuff that you want to*!
Our troupe carries the winter chill, ambling in
Where we are hit with a haze of vibrations and dim lights
A man mumbles on guitar up front, the sensation
Bounces off countless black and white photographs
Inching into our brains like the rum and coke
Everything is fluid, homogenized
Outside, I realize, this city moves the world
An industrial snow globe that burns with power beneath
Yet all I see is a lonely girl at the bar
Casting glances until all our eyes are met
